  • University of Guelph’s Tomatosphere team won a prestigious Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI) Award--normally reserved for aeronautic experts--for a project on the effects of space travel on the germination of tomato seeds.

  • Alberta Energy recently invested $1.275 million in Olds College’s BioFuel Technology Centre, which will help fund the College’s plan to develop a sustainable biofuel research program.

  • Soy-based products made for University of Guelph’s Project SOY competition include fortune cookies, building materials, candy, gluten-free pasta, modeling clay, a pen and paper set, and breakfast patties.

  • The Western Canadian Livestock Expo in Saskatoon includes a Super Cow competition and a Milking Parlour for grade five students.

  • University of Alberta’s Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences received the largest gift of land for research ever to a Canadian university: 777 acres.

  • Nova Scotia Agricultural College’s collaboration with Dronten University of Applied Sciences, in the Netherlands, gives students a ten day orientation in Iceland where they get to know one another while exploring the Icelandic food industry.

  • The Arboriculture program at Olds College’s School of Horticulture is hosting the International Society of Arboriculture Prairie Chapter 2008 Tree Climbing Championship (TCC).

  • McGill University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (at Macdonald Campus) has Canada’s largest arboretum, the oldest major herbarium in the country and, with 2.8 million specimens, the largest university-based insect collection in Canada.

  • Olds College hosts Fibre Week, which includes fleece shows.

  • Program-specific scholarships include over 300 for agriculture programs, 125 for environmental programs, and over 150 food-related awards.
