Students can enter university natural & applied science bachelor's degree programs directly from high school and must apply using either their respective provincial application centre or directly to each institute. Applicants must submit proof of completion of a secondary school diploma, typically including English, mathematics, chemistry, biology and/or physics. In selecting applicants, a school admits students based on their high school grade point average (GPA). Higher averages are required for admission to programs in which the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the number of places available. The competitive GPA can change from year to year as it is based on the quality of the applicant pool and space available in the program. For many universities, applicants to the Faculty of Science require a minimum GPA of 70%. An institute may have specific application and document deadlines for each program within the Faculty of Science; therefore, it is advisable to check with each program of interest for details. Applicants with high academic standing may qualify for early admission, and interested students should consult the institution for early application dates, which often differ from general application dates. Applicants should expect to pay a non-refundable application fee of anywhere between $25-$100 as specified by the institution.

Community colleges generally have open admission in which students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. However, admission to most community college natural & applied science programs requires that students submit proof of completion of a secondary school diploma along with acceptable performance in required subjects such as English, mathematics, chemistry, biology and/or physics. In selecting applicants for highly competitive programs, the college may also ask an applicant for supplemental information. Prospective students can apply to most community college natural & applied science programs using their respective provincial application centre or directly to each institute.

Admission requirements to career college applied science programs vary; however, most require students to complete an application form (print or online) that includes their academic background plus any additional relevant qualifications or experience. Some applied science programs require that applicants demonstrate academic proficiency in selected subjects, while other programs may require previous work experience. In general, admission to most career college applied science programs require that students submit proof of completion of a secondary school diploma, attend a personal assessment interview, pass an aptitude test, provide a resume and/or transcripts as necessary. Career colleges differ in that some offer continuous enrolment with programs starting every month; others operate on a more traditional semester system with a fall and/ or winter intake. Many career colleges therefore have no cut-off dates for admission and instead process applications all year round. Others have specific deadlines after which applications are no longer considered. Both community colleges and career colleges with internal scholarships and bursaries may encourage early application in order to qualify for these awards and financial assistance.
